Americas love for the game of football (known as rugby to us non-US citizens) is a very well known fact. Americans from all walks of life flock to their respective citys stadium to watch the home team in action. In fact the Americans take the sport so seriously that even the college football stadium have a capacity of over 100,000. Having said that I present to you the largest football stadiums in the United States.

#5 Bryant-Denny Stadium

Built: 1928

Capacity: 101,821

The prize for the fifth largest stadium in the United States and the eight largest stadium in the world goes to the Bryant-Denny Stadium which is the home of the Alabama Crimson Tide – the official football team of the University Of Alabama. The stadium was last expanded in 2010 and currently has a seating capacity of 101,821. The stadium takes it’s name from George.H.Denny, the former University of Alabama president, and Paul ‘Bear’ Bryant who was one of the team’s coaches.

#4 Neyland Stadium

Built: 1921

Capacity: 102,455

Neyland Stadium the home of the Tennessee Volunteers, the official football team of the University of Tennessee, is the fourth largest stadium in the United States and the sixth largest in the world. The stadium takes its name after Robert Neyland who coached the team for a long time. The Rocky Top has also been used to host games of various NFL teams.

#3 Ohio Stadium

Capacity: 102,329

Ohio Stadium, popularly known as ‘The Horseshoe’ due to it’s distinctive shape, is the third largest college football stadium in the United States and the seventh largest stadium in the world with a capacity of 102,329. The stadium, which is home to the Ohio State Buckeys – the official football team of Ohio State University, was built in 1921 and last expanded in 2001. Besides hosting football matches the Horseshoe has also hosted many musical concerts with Metallica, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones and U2 all playing live at the stadium.

#2 Beaver Stadium

Built: 1959

Capacity: 106,572.

The title of the second largest stadium in the United States and the fourth largest stadium in the world belongs to the Beaver Stadium – home of the Penn State Nittany Lions, the official football team of Pennsylvania State University. The Beaver Stadium has a seating capacity of 106,572 and is the first stadium to have it’s interior included in Google Street View. The stadium was opened in 1960 and was last renovated in 2001.

#1 Michigan Stadium

Built: 1927

Capacity: 109,901

The Michigan Stadium which is the home of the Michigan Wolverines, the official NFL team of the University Of Michigan, is the largest stadium in the United States and the third largest stadium in the world. The Big House, as it is popularly called, has a capacity of 109,901 but is capable of hosting more than 115,000 people. The enormous stadium was built in 1927 at a cost of $950,000 with an original capacity of 82,000. It was expanded to it’s current size in 2010.
