The NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award is an annual award given to a player who has shown great resilience in proving themselves in the league by overcoming adversities or injuries. As with all the other NFL awards, the one given out by the Associated Press (AP) is considered the official one, but several other organizations are also giving out similar awards. Annually, the Associated Press takes into consideration the candidates for this specific recognition based on their previous year’s adversity. For instance, past winners have received this honor either while overcoming serious injuries that caused them to miss the previous year or for greatly improving their performance in comparison to the previous year.
Associated Press started handing out this award in 1963, but then stopped just four years later in 1967. After a long gap of three decades, they resumed the award from 1998. This honor has been handed out to both the offensive and the defensive members of a team on different occasions. However, the quarterbacks are the ones that have earned it more than any other position, as of January 2025.
