Football players are well known for their fame, popularity, and luxurious lifestyle off the field as well as their exceptional careers on the field. They have much shorter careers than the general population but end up making more than enough money to lead a quality life after their careers come to an end. These players are celebrities and whatever they do is always tracked and scrutinized. In such circumstances, with so much wealth and status, it is important for individuals in such situations to come to the aid of others who need it.
The NFLPA’s Alan Page Community Award, as the name suggests, honors those players who go above and beyond for the community by performing services in their hometown and team city. This goodwill has been recognized by the NFL since 1967 when the award was first presented to the former Green Bay Packers quarterback Bart Starr.
The Alan Page Award was known as the Byron "Whizzer" White NFL Man of the Year Award for a long time until it was in 2018 by means of honoring Alan Page. Many notable former players such as Archie Manning, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Warrick Dunn, Gale Sayers and more have been honored with this award in the past.
Who is Alan Page?
The man after whom this award is now named, was a former NFL defensive tackle and a Minnesota state Supreme Court judge as well. He was the first defensive person to ever win the NFL MVP and since then only Lawrence Taylor has been able to match this feat.
During his career in the NFL, Page played for two franchises notably, the Minnesota Vikings and the Chicago Bears. He became an NFL Champion in 1969 with the Vikings and earned several defensive accolades. Starting his career in 1967, Page played for 15 long years before finally hanging up his boots in 1981. He was the player representative of the National Football League Players Association for several years during the 1970s.
After his playing career came to an end, Page would eventually become a justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court, something he had started working towards even during his NFL career. Throughout his life, Page has done extensive community work and has even received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Donald Trump in 2018.
Thus, the award has been rightly honored in the name of a legendary football player who refrained from resting on his laurels and decided to dedicate his life towards the greater good. Following is the list of all such players who have excelled in their own way in performing topnotch community service leading to being honored with this prestigious award.
