Graham Gano scored one of the clutchest field goals in NFL history when he nailed a 63-yarder with just a second left on the clock for the Panthers against the Giants, when they were trailing 31-30 at that point. David Akers blasted one in to tie the record for the 49ers against the Packers. Sebastian Janikowski had also tied the record for the Raiders against the Broncos.
But the person's record they all tied was Tom Dempsey, who achieved the feat first back in 1970, one that stood for 43 years. It was scored for the New Orleans Saints against the Detroit Lions.
#2 - 64 yards
Matt Prater of the Denver Broncos finally broke the old record of 63-yard field goals in 2013 against the Tennessee Titans.
Just before halftime, Peyton Manning marched the ball to the Tennessee 46 from where he had to attempt that field goal. Since the air is thinner in Denver because of the altitude, there was a good chance that he was going to make it. But it should not take away from the accomplishment of the man who finally broke the record that had stood for 43 years. His own record of the longest field goal in NFL history stood for 8 years before it was broken this season.
#1 - 66 yards
Remember when we said how Justin Tucker's longest field goal for the Baltimore Ravens against the Detroit Lions was not a 61-yard field goal? That's because the NFL record for the longest field goal stands at 66 yards, which he scored against the same opponents this season. it beat the previous best mark by a clear 2 yards.
The Detroit Lions were leading the Baltimore Ravens 17-16 with three seconds remaining when Justin Tucker stepped up. He nailed the kick and for a while it looked as if it might not have the distance. But, almost in slow motion, it hit the crossbar and before the home fans in Detroit could erupt, it arced in after the bounce to hold good. As a hush fell on those in attendance, there was delirium for the Baltimore Ravens on the pitch.
