Marcus Ardel Taulauniu Mariota, commonly known as Marcus Mariots, is an American football backup quarterback for the Washington Commanders, as of the 2024 NFL season. He was selected in the first round by the Tennessee Titans in the 2015 NFL draft with the 2nd overall pick. After going 29-32 in his first five seasons with the Titans (via Pro Football Reference), Mariota was benched in favor of Ryan Tannehill, who the team traded for in the 2019 offseason. He eventually spent time as a backup for the Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, and Philadelphia Eagles before coming to Washington in 2024. After his time with the Titans, Mariota’s only stint as a starter came with the Falcons in the 2022 season, when he started 13 games for the team, as per Pro Football Reference.
Before entering the NFL, Mariota played football for the Oregon Ducks, representing the University of Oregon at the collegiate level. According to Sports Reference, he recorded 10,796 passing yards and 105 touchdowns to just 14 interceptions. Mariota was named to the All-Pac 12 Conference First Team thrice during his time there.
