An offensive genius, Matt LaFleur has been a mastermind on the coaching side of the football in the NFL. During his tenure with various coaching junctions, he became especially adept at maximizing quarterback play, thereby landing his first major role in the NFL.
Serving as an Offensive Assistant for the Houston Texans for two years, he showed his speciality for the wide receiver and quarterback positions while simultaneously developing a strong relationship with Kyle Shanahan who was serving as an offensive coordinator. He then took his talents to the Washington Redskins as a Quarterbacks coach. His relationship with Kyle was a key factor in the switch owing to his father Mike Shanahan's role in Washington. During his tenure with the Redskins, Matt was in close quarters with 2 other head coaches apart from Shanahan, those being Sean McVay and Mike McDaniel. He was especially instrumental in the development of Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins.
Then, came a shocking move by LaFleur. Taking his propensity for quarterback coaching, he joined the college football program at Notre Dame. His primary beneficiary became Everett Golson who would go on to total nearly 3,500 yards with 29 touchdowns, the 4th in school history with such numbers. However, he could not stay away from the bright lights for long.
In 2015, he would join the Atlanta Falcons, once again as a quarterbacks coach, and again as a pair with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. LaFleur’s impact was undeniable as he became a major factor towards Matt Ryan winning his first and only MVP, en route to a Super Bowl appearance.
His next stop was a promotion as he took over sole responsibility of the entire offense for the Los Angeles Rams in 2017, working as offensive coordinator, reuniting with Sean McVay. Their impact was immediate as they led the Rams to an 11-5 record along with the best offense in the league. His next stint was the same role but for the Tennessee Titans in 2018. His role had added responsibilities like play-calling, unlike his stint in Los Angeles. However, an injury-plagued season led to the team managing just the 27th-ranked offense.
In 2019, LaFleur would take over as the official head coach for the Green Bay Packers. Pairing his quarterback coaching expertise with a legend like Aaron Rodgers was sure to lead to some explosive results.
Matt LaFleur's teams coached
Houston Tеxans
Matt LaFlеur began his coaching tenure in the NFL with the Houston Texans. While he came in as a relative novice, working as an offensive assistant, his genius on the offensive side of the football became wildly apparent. However, the tenure is most notable for the strong relationship he built with Kyle Shanahan.
Washington Redskins (now Commanders)
In 2010, LaFlеur moved to the Washington Redskins under Kyle’s father Mike. There, he could visualize and enact his offensive genius leading to a strong run as a Quarterbacks coach cementing him as one of the better offense innovators in the sport.
Notrе Damе
Taking a break from the NFL, LaFlеur would change the trajectory of Notre Dame and Everett Golson in particular, leading the youngster to a historic campaign worth nearly 3,500 yards and 30 touchdowns.
Atlanta Falcons
But, he would soon return to the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons in 2015. During his two seasons with the team, he became one of the best Quarterback coaches in the league, playing a pivotal role in the emergence and excellence of Matt Ryan as he would go on to win his one and only MVP. While the season would end in disaster for the Falcons courtesy of the 28-3 game, LaFleur had already established his credentials.
Los Angеlеs Rams
In 2017, Matt LaFlеur would pair back with Kyle Shanahan with explosive results, leading the team to a number-1 ranked offense along with an 11-5 record.
Tеnnеssее Titans
LaFlеur would switch teams but in the same role. However, the results were largely ineffective, due in large part to an injury-plagued season for the Titans that paved the way for a 27th-ranked offense for them. After 2018, LaFleur would fully take on the head coaching responsibilities.
Grееn Bay Packеrs
Expectations were sky-high for the A-Rod and LaFleur pairing. They did not disappoint. In his very first season with the team, Matt would set several milestones. He became the winningest coach since Jim Harbaugh in 2011. He was also responsible for a 13-3 record, the first Packers coach with double-digit victories while also leading the team to a division title and a perfect record against the NFC North. It was the team’s first playoff appearance in 4 years, culminating in a NFC Championship Game loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
LaFlеur would duplicate his record the second season, with the 26-6 start serving as the best in half a century for any coach in NFL history. His offensive genius was on full display as the Packers were the league leaders in offense, with Rodgers setting the all-time Packers record with 48 touchdowns, winning MVP honors in the process. The first round of the playoffs saw the league-best offense against the league-best defense in the form of the Los Angeles Rams. As history suggests, the offense took the cake in this one, with the Packers once again finding themselves in the Championship Game. Unfortunately, LaFleur would once again taste defeat, along with some criticism, as the Packers lost to the Tampa Bay Buccanneers 31-26. The criticism was due to a critical call in electing for a field goal instead of a TD plus 2-point conversion while down 31-23.
The next season, the spectacular run would continue as Rodgers would win back-to-back league MVPs. Due to a thrilling Week 8 victory against the undefeated Arizona Cardinals, LaFleur would cement himself as the winningest coach through his first 40 starts in NFL history with 33 wins. He would complete the trifecta, once again winning 13 games, the first team in NFL history to do so. Moreover, he became the first head coach since Barry Switzer for the Dallas Cowboys to lead his team to three-division titles in his first three seasons, while also setting the record for most wins through the first 3 seasons for a head coach. After a disappointing 2022 season where team failed to make the postseason for the first time since LafLeur took over the head coaching duties, Green Bay Packers part ways with future HOF quarterback Aaron Rodgers in 2023 offseason. Even with first-year starter in Jordan Love as the signal caller, Matt LaFleur showcased his offensive wizardry once again in 2023, by taking the Packers all the way to Divisional Round en route to demolishing Dallas Cowboys in Wild Card round.
