In the game of American football, there is the offense which tries to put up points, and the defense which tries to prevent them. Micah Parsons, the edge rusher for the Dallas Cowboys is all about the latter. Parson, who is just 25 years old as of September 2024, has only played three seasons in the NFL. Even so, the relatively young professional has dominated the scene and has been in the mix for the NFL’s best defensive player each year. As a matter of fact, Parsons even won the 2021 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award on the back of his brilliant rookie campaign where he finished the year having played 16 games in which he had 84 combined tackles, 13 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and 3 pass deflections.
The most notable aspect of his game thus far has been his level of consistency on the field. Making crucial plays is nothing new to him, but as offenses are now aware of his strengths, and try to come up with ploys to slow him down, it also creates opportunities for his teammates so his overall impact on the game cannot be overlooked. He is without a doubt one of the leaders on this Cowboys team.
Micah Parsons Draft
Micah Parsons entered the NFL in 2021 when he was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round with the 12th overall pick. Prior to his draft in 2021, Parsons had played just two years at Penn State in 2018 and 2019. He opted to sit out the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to enter the 2021 NFL Draft.
In his two seasons though, Parsons showed what he was capable of with the Penn State Nittany Lions and his NFL Combine performance was also more than enough to solidify his status as one of the best linebackers in the class. At 6 feet 3 inches, 240 pounds, and a hand size of 11”, Parsons also had the most athletic body in the entire linebacker class. He even ran a blistering 4.39-second 40-yard dash.
Other notable players to come out of the 2021 NFL Draft are quarterback - Trevor Lawrence, wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase, DeVonta Smith, and Amon-Ra St. Brown, cornerback Patrick Surtain II, and more.
Micah Parsons NFL
In 2021, the Dallas Cowboys started the season by using Parsons as a defensive end. He quickly found success at the role becoming a big-time edge rusher for the team. Towards the middle of the season, Parsons hit his stride and registered a minimum of one sack per game for 6 consecutive games from week 9 to week 14. His brilliant season culminated with several accomplishments such as the Defensive Rookie of the Year, First-Team All-Pro, and Pro Bowl selection.
In 2022, Parsons would continue building on the solid start he had from his rookie year. He would once again finish the season with excellent stats such as 65 combined tackles, 13.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries including 1 touchdown, and 3 pass deflections. For the second year running Parsons was named to the First-Team All-Pro, and the Pro Bowl.
Completing his third year in the league in 2023, Parsons showed no signs of being contained and once again finished the season with similar stats as before.
