The journey of former NFL offensive lineman Michael Oher is an extraordinary one that touches the heart and soul. Coming from the lowest of lows and reaching the highest of highs in the sport of American football, Oher and the family that adopted him are an inspiration to all. What happened in Michael’s life is nothing short of a miracle, and his story is well documented in a 2009 movie called ‘The Blind Side’.
The strong tackle always seemed a step ahead of the oncoming pass rushers as he would be in the perfect stance on most occasions even before the rushers made their way over the line of scrimmage. He was able to get into the best positions thanks to his quick reaction to ball snaps. Once Oher would set up and get his hands on the opponent, he was almost always winning his battles.
The one real knock on him during his scouting reviews was that he wasn’t consistent enough and that could have led to problems in the NFL. However, with the way his career panned out, it is safe to conclude that he took care of that issue to a great extent.
Does Michael Oher have a ring?
Michael Oher came into the league in 2009 with a lot of expectations. He had had a great four years in college playing for the Ole Miss Rebels football team. Starting out as a guard in his freshman year, Oher played in ten games and made significant contributions. His overall ability helped him secure the left tackle position from his sophomore year and he developed into a great two sided player.
As such, selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2009 NFL Draft, Oher was assigned the right tackle duties in his rookie year. However, due to an injury to the starting left tackle, Michael was shifted to the other side for a period of seven games before returning to right tackle. In his overall five year tenure with the Ravens, Oher was constantly alternating between both positions as and when the team required. Thus, this provided the team much-needed flexibility and it was an important aspect of the Ravens' offense working its magic.
As an integral part of the Ravens' front line, Michael Oher was an important piece of the puzzle which helped the team reach the Super Bowl in 2013 and eventually win it. Winning his first ring was a proud moment not only for him but for his entire adoptive family as they had stood with him through thick and thin.
Super Bowl 50
After his five-year stint came to an end with the Ravens, Oher signed a four-year deal with the Tennessee Titans but his tenure would be extremely short-lived there. Starting only eleven games in the 2014 season due to injuries, the Titans immediately released him before the 2015 season.
Oher then made his way to the Carolina Panthers where he signed a two year contract. As a free agent, he cited the influence of Cam Newton, the Panthers starting quarterback at the time, as the reason why he decided to join the team. Even though Michael had struggled during his few games with the Titans, the Panthers felt that Oher would be the ideal fit for the left tackle position. With the backing of the team, Oher made the most of the chance he got as he played over 98% of the snaps in the year and allowed a career-low four sacks.
Riding high on confidence, he was once again instrumental this time helping the Panthers reach the Super Bowl in 2015. Unfortunately, though, the special Super Bowl 50 did not go their way as the Denver Broncos led by the legendary Peyton Manning defeated them with a score of 24-10. This would be the last time Michael Oher played in the Championship game.
