In Week 14, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers flew 2,500 miles across the nation to sunny California to take on the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium in a critical game in their quest to win the NFC South.

Heading into the game, the Buccaneers were 7-6 and held a one-game lead over the Atlanta Falcons in the race for the division title. Two of Tampa's six losses are against Atlanta, giving the latter the advantage if both teams finished the season with identical records.

A loss in LA for the Buccaneers and a victory for the Falcons over the struggling Las Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football would have seen Tampa slip to second in the division with only three games left on the schedule.

The Buccaneers needed their top stars, like wide receiver Mike Evans, to step up on Sunday, against the Chargers, who have the league's stingiest defense, which had given up only 15.9 points per game in their first 13 games this year.

Thankfully, the veteran answered his team's call and delivered his best performance of the season

Mike Evans' stats vs. Chargers in Week 15

Here are Mike Evans' numbers from the Buccaneers' blowout win over the Chargers:

  • Receptions: 9
  • Targets: 11
  • Receiving yards: 159
  • Receiving Touchdowns: 2

The veteran had a decent first half and finished with five catches for 41 yards. However, he hit top gear in the third and fourth quarters and took the game away from the Chargers.

Less than five minutes after the restart, Baker Mayfield scrambled around on a 2nd-and-13 play to avoid a sack and give his receivers time to find a pocket of space. Evans found one on the left sideline and the quarterback found him perfectly.

Chargers cornerback Tarheeb Stills tried to push the wide receiver out of bounds but whiffed his tackle attempt, giving the Buccaneers superstar a clear path to the endzone for a 58-yard touchdown.

Late in the same period, Evans ran a go-route and left cornerback Kristian Fulton chasing his tail and as soon as Mayfield spotted that he had a step on his defender, he launched a perfect deep ball to the veteran, who caught it in the endzone for a 35-yard touchdown.

This was Evans' most prolific game of the season and surprisingly only his second with over 100 receiving yards and third with multiple touchdowns. The 31-year-old's record of finishing each season of his career with at least 1,000 receiving yards looked in serious jeopardy this year.

However, he's up to 749 for the season with three games left. It may not have been his best campaign but it's looking increasingly likely that his 1000-yard streak will extend to 11 seasons.
