Patrick Mahomes is unarguably the best quarterback drafted in the last 10 years. His arrival on the Kansas City Chiefs has transformed the franchise in unimaginable ways. From winning just one Super Bowl before 2017, the Chiefs have now won three since his arrival and have appeared in every AFC championship game since 2017.

But the Chicago Bears had a chance to nab Mahomes but chose not to.

The story was initially revealed by Pat Mahomes Sr. on a radio show, surprising many. Later, Patrick Mahomes addressed it as a slightly exaggerated version of the actual incident.

“My dad took it a little far,” Mahomes said in a media interview in February 2023. “So, it wasn’t that I thought the Bears were gonna draft me, but I was told that if they drafted a QB, that I would be the QB that they drafted.”

Chicago Bears draft forgotten QB Mitch Trubisky over Patrick Mahomes

His father, Pat Mahomes Sr., had been interviewed on the 670 The Score radio show, during which he said the Bears would draft Patrick Mahomes with the third pick. Pat Mahomes Sr. was fully convinced the Bears would select his son.

Spiegel & Holmes tweeted on Jan. 31, 2023:

“Patrick Mahomes Sr. just told us the Bears told his son they'd be drafting him third overall.”

However, the Bears had different plans on draft day. In 2017, North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Mitch Trubisky was a prominent name rising up the ranks, while Mahomes was considered a risky pick despite his impressive stats. Many believed his numbers were inflated because he played in the Big 12.

As a result, the Bears swapped the No. 3 spot with the San Francisco 49ers to get the No. 2 pick (also giving San Francisco a third- and fourth-round pick in that draft and a third-round pick in 2018). That gave them a wider pool of options, including Myles Garrett, Christian McCaffrey, Marlon Humphrey, Jamal Adams, Marshon Lattimore and Deshaun Watson.

Ultimately, they chose Trubisky, who became a Pro Bowler in 2018 but is now largely forgotten among fans.

Patrick Mahomes grateful for getting drafted by Andy Reid

Reflecting on the draft, Patrick Mahomes has expressed disappointment over the Bears' decision. However, he clarified that the Bears never contacted him directly; he only heard through his camp about the possibility of being selected. The key condition was that the Bears would draft him only if they decided to pick a quarterback in the first round.

Although the final decision caught Mahomes by surprise, he did not have high expectations, as he thought he might be selected in the second or third round coming out of Texas Tech. He was also aware that the Chiefs were interested in him, and he remains grateful that he was ultimately drafted by Andy Reid.
