A great example of an individual who has made it to the top in a career that was never even his first love is the current Cleveland Browns defensive end, Myles Garrett. There are several career choices made by people who are never interested in it in the first place. There may be various reasons for those choices as well, but in general, a professional sportsman generally takes up a career in sports because they truly love it and can’t imagine a life without it.
But for Myles Garrett football or sports for that matter was never really his cup of tea, at least until his freshman year. It is somewhat surprising to know that the big 6 foot 4 inch, 272 lb defender was actually fascinated by something so peaceful such as poetry.
In an interview given to ESPN, Myles states that it was his mother who told him that he could do anything he wanted but he had to play sports. He also mentioned that while he played football and was good at it, he always felt that something inside of him like the passion for the game was always missing.
However, the moment that changed his thought process was when he finally began to realize how good he actually was and that too while not putting in his 100% at practice and training. His coaches were also quick to point him in the right direction encouraging him to work harder due to the potential they could see in him. In fact, his coaches told him point blank that if he wanted he could become the best player in the nation. This was the motivation which set Garrett on his path to football greatness.
Number of sacks that Myles Garrett registered
As of August 2023, Myles Garrett has played a total of six seasons in the NFL and he has recorded an insane 74.5 sacks from 84 games. Barring his rookie year in Cleveland in which he only played in 11 games and had 7 sacks, in each of his next five seasons he has achieved double-digit sacks. Getting better and better in his overall game, his 2021 and 2022 seasons saw him amass 16 sacks each.
As a defensive end, Garrett has been one the best additions to the Browns football team especially on the defense. And as good as he has been for his team, he has been equally terrifying for the opponents. Averaging nearly one sack per game, he has been extremely difficult to contain.
As a defensive end looking to rush the quarterback, the Texas native is lightning-quick off the line. He is quick to sell a move one way and cut back instantly even before the opposing tackle has got his bearing together. Therefore, his speed accounts for so many hurries that even on plays he doesn't get sacks, he still draws an error or limits a potentially better play from developing.
As a defensive end, the job description involves a lot more than just sacks, but to have a player of Garrett’s caliber who can do all the important things on defense and still find ways to get to the quarterback for a sack is just exemplary. Pressuring the quarterback into a throw he doesn’t want to make or tipping the ball are also a very important part of the defensive back’s job and Garrett is one of the best in those aspects as well.
