The New York Jets is a professional American football team, which was established in 1959 and played their inaugural season in 1960. They played one decade in the American Football League before both AFL and NFL got merged. They were the first New York based team to win the Lombardi in the Super Bowl era. As of 2024, the Jets 13-season playoff drought (tied with Buffalo Sabres of NHL) is the longest in North American Sports landscape.

The team’s one and only Super Bowl win came in 1969. The team plays in the AFC East and their last division title came in 2002. The team is known for their loyal fanbase.

The Evolution of the New York Jets Logo

When the Jets joined the AFL, they were known as New York Titans. The team colors were blue and gold. In 1963, the organization got a new owner who changed the team name to Jets, which led to the iconic green and white color palette. The team has gone through different iterations of the foundational logo team designed in 1964.

1960 - 1962 - Original logo

The original logo had a football player in motion with Titans of New York wordmark written on his right side in uppercase. ‘Titans’ wordmark was in gold.

1963

With the new team name in place, a new logo was introduced by the Jets. This emblem featured a green plane with ‘JETS’ written on it in white.

1964 - 1977

The football-shaped emblem was introduced with the same Jets wordmark in it, as the previous version and enlarged ‘NY’ behind it. Under those two caps was a small football. The color palette used was green and white.

1978 - 1997

The new logo had a modernized version of enlarged Jets wordmark in uppercase. A flying jet was drawn over the caps. This emblem is often referred to as supersonic jets.

1998 - 2018

The 1964 design made a comeback with some modifications. The shape of the logo looks more like an oval than a football. This design was chosen by Hall Of Famer Bill Parcells, who was coach of the team during that time. The primary color was changed to dark green while the football at the bottom also had an updated look.

2019 - 2023

The primary green was lightened compared to the previous version and the shape of football like the 1964 style returned back. The ‘NY’ at the backend was removed and replaced with the New York wordmark above the Jets imprint. The football at the bottom had five laces on it.

2024 - Current Logo

The supersonic jets made the comeback as this emblem is a replica of the 1978 version with some minor tweaks. The fonts of ‘JETS’ have minor changes and the jet on top of the wordmark is made slightly bigger.

New York Jets Alternative Symbols

The team has used a plethora of alternate logos dating back to 1964. Most of them have a football shape with different caps used in it like ‘NYJ’, ‘NY’, ‘JETS’ etc. The other logos consist of only imprints such as NY Jets, New York Jets, ‘J’ and ‘NYJ’ in uppercase along with different styles and fonts. One unique logo is of a green football shape emblem having Jet in a flying motion.

New York Jets Anniversary Emblems

New York has made four emblems to celebrate the team's 25th, 40th and 50th anniversary.

1984

A silver outline circle is designed which has Jets helmet inside it along with red ribbon. There are also wordmarks on the silver outline which reads Silver Anniversary in uppercase. At the bottom ‘A’ is present in red along with blue football. ‘A’ is a reminder of the team's original roots as the Jets played their first 10 seasons in AFL.

2003

This emblem was made to celebrate the team's 40th anniversary since they were officially named Jets. An oval-shaped logo with dark green outline had ‘NYXL’ decals inside it. Those fonts were also in dark green color and had two thick lines on top and bottom of it respectively. Four decades of Jets football is written in uppercase below the ‘NYXL’ imprint. Above the imprint year team name came into existence and the present year of that time was mentioned.

2009

The team celebrated its golden jubilee by releasing another oval shaped logo. ‘50’ is written inside that logo with dark green ribbon passing through the middle. At the bottom is a ‘NY’ wordmark embedded in a football-like shape.

The Jets were one of the few teams to only wear white helmets for a decade and half since 1963. The logos on the helmet have changed from time to time but the iconic color palette of green and white has been never tinkered with in franchise’s history.

1960 - 1962

The Jets helmet had a navy base helmet with a single gold stripe at center. There was no logo on the helmet.

1963 - 1977

Ushering into the Jets era, the team opted for a white helmet with green stripes running down the middle. In 1963, only a single green stripe was present. From next year onwards, two stripes became a norm on Jets headgear. The logos on the helmet kept changing with the team opting for different primary emblems through the timeline, however the look of the helmet remained unchanged.

1978 - 1997

The late 70s decade saw the introduction of kelly green helmets. This was the first time in franchise history that green was the primary color on headgear with supersonic jets logo in white. In the next two decades the only change came in the form of facemask. The white facemask on the helmet got changed to black one in 1990. There were no stripes running through the center around this time.

1998 - 2018

The white helmets made their comeback in 1998. Bill Parcells, who was the Jets head coach at the time, wanted the team to get back to winning ways and white helmets represented a Super Bowl winning era. It was the exact replica of the previous white version with only differences seen in the color palette. Instead of kelly green, a darker shade of green was used which matched the Jets logo of that time.

2019 - 2023

The primary color got updated to metallic green while the Jets overhauled logo was attached on both sides.
