Based in the New York metropolitan area, the New York Jets are a professional American football team. The Jets play in the American Football Conference (AFC) East division of the NFL. In East Rutherford, New Jersey, five miles (8.0 km) west of New York City, the New York Jets and New York Giants share MetLife Stadium, where they play their home games. In 1959, the team was established as the Titans of New York, a founding member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1970, the AFL and NFL merged, and the team joined the NFL.
The Jets became the first AFL team to defeat an NFL team in an AFL-NFL World Championship Game when they upset the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III in 1968. The Jets are the NFL team with the fewest division titles in the post-merger era, having only won the AFC Eastern Division twice since 1970, in 1998 and 2002. They have made it to the AFC Championship Game four times and qualified for the postseason 12 times, most recently in 2010 when they were defeated by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
