Week 9 of the 2024 NFL season kicked off with a Thursday Night Football clash between the struggling New York Jets and the high-flying Houston Texans at MetLife Stadium.
The home team came into this game on the back of five straight losses, including a gut-wrenching 25-22 defeat to the New England Patriots last Sunday, which saw them slip to the bottom of the AFC East standings.
The visitors arrived in New Jersey following a 23-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 8, which gave them a two-game lead atop the AFC South standings. They have won five of their last six.
The Jets desperately needed a win to end their dismal run and keep their hopes of a playoff berth alive, while the Texans were hoping to continue their fine form and extend their advantage over their division rivals before they play on Sunday. Here's how the game panned out.

New York Jets vs. Houston Texans game summary
After the two teams exchanged punts in the game's first two drives, the Texans drove the ball down to the Jets' 12-yard line and were in prime position to take the lead, but a sack from Michael Clemons caused a fumble and Will McDonald IV recovered the ball to end the visitors' promising drive.
After two more punts, New York had seemingly taken the lead early in the second quarter after quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Malachi Corley combined for a perfectly executed jet sweep from 17 yards out. However, a replay review suggested that he had committed a major gaffe, resulting in a touchback and a turnover.
Late in the second quarter, Texans running back Joe Mixon finally opened the scoring after a three-yard touchdown run on the 17th play of a drive that took nearly eight and a half minutes off the game clock.
The Jets' offense continued to struggle and punted the ball back to Houston. The visitors capitalized on the momentum, as quarterback C.J. Stroud found wide receiver Tank Dell with a 31-yard pass.
However, the drive stalled and forced the Texans to attempt a 56-yard field goal, which kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn pushed wide right, letting the Jets off the hook. The half ended with Houston leading 7-0.
The visitors missed several good opportunities in the first half to put points on the board and New York made them pay on the opening possession of the second half. Rodgers and the offense embarked on a 12-play, 49-yard drive before Garrett Wilson caught a pass one-handed and took it in the endzone.
The Texans fired back immediately as a terrific kick return from Steven Sims gave Stroud and the offense a short field to work with. They drove the ball 20 yards before the Jets offense stalled them at their 36-yard line. Fairbairn converted from 54 yards out to help his team retake the lead.
Buoyed by the touchdown in the third quarter, Rodgers and Co. carried the momentum in their second drive of the half and carved up Houston's defense. They drove the ball 49 yards before the veteran quarterback and Wilson combined for one of the best plays of the season.
The Texans responded with a terrific drive, which stalled at the Jets' nine-yard line. They opted to take the points rather than going for it on 4th-and-7 and it proved to be a costly error, as Fairbairn fluffed his lines from 27 yards out.
Rodgers and the Jets offense remained aggressive and it paid dividends as the quarterback combined with wide receiver Davante Adams for a 37-yard touchdown pass that ended the Texans' hopes of a win.
Houston responded with a field goal to cut the lead to eight points, but couldn't recover the subsequent onside kick and New York knelt the clock out to snap its five-game losing streak.
