Jerry Jones has hired former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus to serve as the team's next defensive coordinator, and fan reactions are exactly what you'd expect.

It was announced this week that Jones inked a deal to promote last year's offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, to be the team's next head coach. It certainly wasn't the most attractive signing for Cowboys fans, in a hiring pool that included the likes of Joe Brady, Liam Coen, Pete Carroll - and even rumors of potentially hiring Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders - Dallas promoted a coordinator who took part in the team's disappointing 7-10 record.

For weeks rumors soared that Dallas could be eying Sanders for the vacant position, given he now has head coaching experience at the collegiate level. However, with rumors that Sanders might bring along his son and soon-to-be rookie NFL quarterback Shedeur Sanders with him, that possibility seemed to become less and less likely given franchise quarterback Dak Prescott remains in Dallas with a huge contract on the books.

Now, the Cowboys have hired Eberflus to man their defense, months after Eberflus was fired as the head coach of the Chicago Bears following six-straight losses. Fans took to social media to react to the news, with a very mixed reception. Some continued to poke fun at the organization for their continued blunders, while others shared optimisim given Eberflus' past success as a defensive coordinator.

"Pls tell me he’s a better DC than HC" one fan asked.
"He was good as D coordinator in Indy," another fan said.

Eberflus adopts a Cowboys defense with major talent, featuring names such as Micah Parsons, Trevon Diggs, Bob Lilly, and more. It will be interesting to see the impact Eberflus can have on the defense with so many key foundational pieces already in play.

As for the team as a whole, new head coach Schottenheimer will have the benefit of already being familiar with franchise quarterback Dak Prescott and star wide receiver Ceedee Lamb. If Dallas is able to be aggressive in free agency and pick up some young talent in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, perhaps Schottenheimer can return Dallas to the playoffs in hopes of reaching their first NFC Championship game in 29 seasons.

With Schottenheimer inked down as the Cowboys' next head coach, only the New Orleans Saints remain as the sole NFL team with a head coaching vacancy. They now have their pick of candidates still available, with the likes of Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady likely leading the charge as the most attractive candidate.
