The Week 15 Thursday Night Football showdown against the Los Angeles Rams was a significant matchup for the San Francisco 49ers, who were looking to keep their slim hopes of securing a playoffs spot alive. Alas, that wasn't meant to be.
In what was a pretty stale encounter between the two NFC heavyweights, neither team managed a touchdown, but the Rams eventually won 12-6. As a result, the Niners' playoff chances were all but decimated.
On KNBR radio, franchise legend Steve Young, a three-time Super Bowl champion, said about the collapse of his beloved franchise this season:
"There was such a desire to be in the Super Bowl. That’s why I feel so terrible today about this Super Bowl window. It’s not going to be as open as it was last year. Those guys that are down there that have a longing to win it, to have one. I feel for them today because it just got to a distance right now that’s super tough," Young said on the show.

"There’s also the Super Bowl hangover which is just an emotional wherewithal the team has to have. They were tired, they’re emotionally spent from the Super Bowl loss."
Young pointed out that the rest of the league has been studying Kyle Shanahan and Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid due to the success they have had with their respective franchises over the past few years.
“The whole league studied the 49ers. They’ve been studying Kyle Shanahan for two or three solid years. They do that with Andy Reid, they do that with Kyle Shanahan. Those are the two guys that everybody studies and says not again. That’s why Kyle is going to have to innovate and reinvent himself."
Are the 49ers officially out of the playoffs?
If the Seattle Seahawks win against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night, the Niners can be mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. The Niners will then have to win out and hope against all hope that the wheels blow off the Seahawks and Rams down the stretch.
The Rams also have a head-to-head advantage over the Niners, which means they are all but out of contention to play meaningful football in January.
