Patrick Mahomes' ankle injury has been front and center all week with the Kansas City Chiefs in the middle of a grueling period where they play three games in 11 days. Mahomes has been vocal about his complaints over the tight schedule and picked up an injury during the Week 15 win over the Cleveland Browns.
He was later diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain, putting his availability for Saturday's showdown against the Houston Texans in question. Three-time Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth has been unhappy with how Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has gone about his business.
On FS1's "Breakfast Ball" show this week, the former Denver Broncos guard made his feelings clear on what he termed as 'hubris' on Reid's part.
"This is going to be his most important coaching job of the season to this point," Schlereth said. "I'm telling you right now, Andy Reid has an aversion to running the football. He does not like it, and it's a problem.

"I thought that coaching job by Andy Reid was football hubris. You’re averaging 6.5 yards a carry. They're inviting you in Tampa to run the football on them. You're like, ' No, I’m going to win it the way I’m going to win it.' In that game, Patrick Mahomes ran for his life. He was under duress for the entirety of that football game."
In that game against the Buccaneers on Nov. 4, Mahomes was sacked twice but threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns in a 30-24 OT win.
The Broncos icon also advised Reid on protecting his star quarterback but did not express any confidence in Reid following that game plan.
"It comes down to this: Will you run the ball? Will you set up the screen game? Can you do that? Can you adhere to that and keep Patrick Mahomes out of the way? To me, the answer is no, you probably can't," Schlereth added.
Will Patrick Mahomes play in Week 16 vs Houston?
Things are looking up for Mahomes. The three-time Super Bowl champion practiced fully Tuesday and Wednesday, signaling he'll play against a top pass rush unit.
If Reid decides to be a little more cautious and rests his star quarterback for the hectic part of the remaining schedule, Carson Wentz will be available to line up under center.
