Kansas City Chiefs fans let out a collective gasp during their Week 15 showdown against the Cleveland Browns when Patrick Mahomes limped off the field late in the game. Backup quarterback Carson Wentz took his place under center, finishing 2-of-2 for 20 yards, but Mahomes had already wreaked enough havoc to ensure the Chiefs would take home their 13th win of the season.

Mahomes was later diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain, throwing his availability for the short turnaround to Saturday's game against the Houston Texans in doubt.

There was a lot of debate around whether the Chiefs should shut Mahomes down for the rest of the regular season considering they have just about wrapped the No. 1 seed. However, Denver Broncos icon Mark Schlereth was focused on another aspect when it comes to the Chiefs.

On FS1's "Breakfast Ball" podcast, Schlereth urged coach Andy Reid to do a better job of keeping Mahomes safe considering the state of their offensive line.

"If you need to call the plays in which you protect your quarterback through running the football, the quick play action, the quick game, the three-step drop game, the bubble screens, the swing passes, that’s how you protect your quarterback," Schlereth said.
"Sacks are a quarterback-driven and playcaller-driven statistic. If your offensive line is busted up and they’re not playing well and you’re putting your starting guard out at left tackle, you better to do a better job as a playcaller. That’s on Andy Reid, you have to do a better job as a playcaller."

Latest on Patrick Mahomes' injury ahead of Week 16 vs. Texans

Andy Reid said they will consider Mahomes a week-to-week injury concern after the three-time Super Bowl champion suffered a high-ankle sprain against Cleveland. The Chiefs released their first injury report for the week, and there were two pieces of good news in there for Chiefs fans.

Mahomes was a full participant on Tuesday, which means he is likely to be available to suit up against one of the NFL's best pass-rushing units. Marquee free-agent addition Hollywood Brown was also a full participant on Tuesday, so we could see him make a much-awaited return to the field.
