Brock Purdy and Joshua Dobbs took the field for the San Francisco 49ers during Week 2 of the NFL preseason. The team played against the New Orleans Saints, and Kyle Shanahan decided to get his starter quarterback's feet wet with two drives before handing out to Dobbs.

The backup quarterback finished the day with 12 completions out of 21 passes for 133 yards. While it wasn't the most impressive stat line in the world, it's important to notice that he was playing without the 49ers' superstar players on the offense. He also had a rushing touchdown during the game.

He impressed many fans with some of the things he did, and some even went so far as saying that a new backup would turn the starter in San Francisco:

"Dobbs locked up a roster spot, no doubt. Helluva performance, keep it up!", said a fan.
"Dobbs will be the QB by week 4. Purdy looks irrelevant" was another opinion.
"Settle down people, Great QB2. Remember he's going against 2nd and some 3rd stringers. Playing well though!" said a more rational fan.

His fight is for the QB2 job against Brandon Allen, and so far in preseason, it looks like he's holding the advantage.

Breaking down Josh Dobbs' stats so far in his career

Even though he has been a journeyman for most of his career, he did find himself playing a good number of games as a backup quarterback. His most notable stint was in 2023 with the Arizona Cardinals, for whom he started multiple games before Kyler Murray returned from injury.

He has played in 21 games in the NFL, starting 14. Holding a 3-11 record as a starter, he has thrown 312 completions out of 502 passes, amassing 15 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, 2920 yards and a 77.3 passer rating.

These are the kind of numbers you would expect from a backup quarterback, whose job is more to keep the ship afloat than to do anything really competitive. The 49ers man has made a name and a career for himself from these opportunities, and it looks like he still has a few years left on him.
