Early Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers were mathematically eliminated from postseason contention after the Washington Commanders's 36-33 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. But they still had a game to play, which became a microcosm of their situation in 2024.

Later, they lost 17-29 at the similarly struggling Miami Dolphins. Brock Purdy again dominated in the air, throwing for 313 yards and two touchdowns. However, he was also intercepted once and sacked thrice.

Amidst reports that general manager John Lynch would be offering him a record-breaking deal worth at least $60 million annually, fans revolted at such a notion:

More of the outrage can be seen below:

"Gotta draw a line in the sand with the Purdy negotiations," one demanded.
"You can't pay Brock Purdy $55M a year. Well, you can, but you'll just have a mediocre franchise," another chided.
"Brock Purdy gonna be selling Toyotas if he keeps this shit up…" another ridiculed.

The Dolphins, meanwhile, were led by running back De'Von Achane, who carried the ball 17 times for 120 yards and the game-sealing touchdown off Kader Kohou's pick.

Brock Purdy, HC Kyle Shanahan speak out after 49ers' loss at Dolphins

Speaking to reporters after the game, Kyle Shanahan was briefed about the defeat. Having seen multiple penalties cost the 49ers on offense including one that contributed to a missed field goal by sophomore kicker Jake Moody, he had a stern message for them.

“No matter what’s going on, when you have those penalties like that, you don’t deserve the win. The biggest thing was lack of concentration. … You can’t have three personal fouls on three drives in the second half and expect to win.”

That message was seconded by Brock Purdy, who also had this to say about the disappointment that was failing to perform excellently enough to reach the playoffs for the third straight time:

“It’s just been not clean football across the board… We did that really well the last couple years and we played team football for four quarters and I just felt like we were pretty dominant. And so, it’s just been hit-or-miss and the momentum as a whole team, as a unit has just been OK.”

Brock Purdy and co. will next take on the Detroit Lions on 30 Dec 2024, before heading out to Arizona to conclude their season against the Cardinals on 5 Jan 2025.
