Steve Wilks has coached in the NFL since 2006 when he became the Chicago Bears' defensive backs coach. Since then, he has become a head coach for the Arizona Cardinals and the Carolina Panthers (interim). He is currently the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator.
Through the first five games of the 2023 NFL season, his crew has been a dominant force, limiting opponents to 13.6 points per game. However, football fans are calling for his ouster after the 49ers defense can’t seem to stop a Minnesota Vikings offense without Justin Jefferson.
Niners fans want Steve Wilks out after Week 7 Monday Night Football defeat
It looked like the San Francisco 49ers defense again dominated after Charvarius Ward made an interception during the Minnesota Vikings’ first drive. However, things turned around after Jordan Addison made his first touchdown catch.

The 49ers were poised to regain momentum after what looked like Ward’s second pick on Kirk Cousins. However, Addison stole the ball from Ward to score his second touchdown before halftime. The San Francisco defense gave two more field goals that helped Minnesota maintain the lead.
The 49ers’ inability to stop the Vikings had one football fan declaring:
“Seriously fire Steve Wilks. Dude is f***ing trash”
Another Twitter user commented:
“FIRE STEVE WILKS”
Here are other reactions stemming from Steve Wilks's unit’s inability to stop the Minnesota Vikings in their Week 7 Monday Night Football showdown.
The 49ers had an opportunity to steal the victory against the Vikings. However, Camryn Bynum intercepted Brock Purdy’s pass for Ray-Ray McCloud to seal a 22-17 win. It’s the Vikings’ first victory at home after four games.
Despite their talented front seven, Wilks’ unit did not have a sack against a Vikings offense line that has been marred by problems all season.
Is Steve Wilks’ job in trouble?
Two consecutive losses won’t look good on Wilks’ resume, especially after they’ve been spotless to start the 2023 NFL season. But while they’re still in a good spot at 5-2, their recent skid is alarming.
After the Vikings, the 49ers will face Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals, a team coming off their bye. Burrow has done better in his last few games while recovering from a calf injury.
The 49ers might be in trouble if they can’t turn things around, even if they will host the Bengals next week. Another defeat won’t help Wilks’ chances of surviving through the end of this season.
