No team has had a better quarterback situation, financially, than the San Francisco 49ers over the past three seasons. The team's starter, Brock Purdy, earned less than a million yearly, allowing the franchise to spend frivolously on its star players.

However, his rookie deal is set to expire at the end of the 2025 season, and he's reportedly set to demand a $60 million-a-year contract extension. Some have suggested that that's too steep a price for Purdy and the team should look into trading the quarterback over making him one of the highest-paid players in the league.

However, in a news conference on Wednesday, 49ers general manager John Lynch clarified that the franchise intends to retain his services despite the hefty cost. He absolved Purdy of any blame for their dismal 6-11 campaign. He blamed the team's injury issues for the 49ers' underwhelming season.

"What we know about Brock is that he's our guy," Lynch said. "We have interest in him being around for a long, long time. He's done so much for our organization. He's won big games, had a little tougher task as we all did with some of the things that happened throughout the course of the year.

"Just could never string games where we were all together and through that, he continued to lead, continued to play at a high level."

Brock Purdy's career so far

After getting drafted as the 262nd and last pick in the 2022 NFL draft, Brock Purdy signed a four-year, $3.7 million contract with the 49ers. He was third on the depth chart behind Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, but injuries to both quarterbacks forced the team to field the rookie and he exceeded all expectations.

Purdy looked at home in the star-studded 49ers offense and led them to the NFC Championship Game. However, he suffered an elbow injury early in the game, which cost San Francisco the win, as the Philadelphia Eagles advanced with a 31-7 victory.

In Purdy's first season as the starter, the team made it to the Super Bowl but fell short against the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime. By the law of progression, the 49ers were destined to hoist the Lombardi Trophy this season. However, they finished the year 6-11 and didn't even make the playoffs.

However, Purdy played well enough to convince the 49ers that he's worthy of a massive contract extension. He only became the starter due to unfortunate circumstances but it was a blessing in disguise for the team and the quarterback.
