"49ers would be absolutely insane": NFL analyst slams idea of $60 million payout for Brock Purdy after 2025 season

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has been a surprise since being the last overall pick drafted by the Niners in the 2022 NFL Draft. Purdy became the 49ers' starting quarterback by the end of the 2022 season after Jimmy Garoppolo suffered an injury.

Purdy then led the Niners to the Super Bowl, eventually falling to the Kansas City Chiefs. Purdy then went 12-4 last season as a starter, leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship. This season, it's been a different story as Purdy, with a 6-9 starting record, and the 49ers, have struggled.

The quarterback will be on the final year of his rookie contract next season, being due for a contract extension. Some have wondered how much of an extension it will be for Purdy. With how the quarterback market has been lately, Purdy may become a top-10, potentially top-five highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.

American sports columnist/journalist Jason Whitlock thinks the 49ers would be insane to pay Purdy a top-dollar contract:

"The San Francisco 49ers would be absolutely insane to pay Brock Purdy $60 million a year," Whitlock said. "That’s my takeaway from Monday Night Football and 16 games this season.

"Hey man, Brock Purdy is a nice quarterback. He’s like Dak Prescott. He is not worth $60 million a year. Brock Purdy, if he were in his right mind, wouldn’t allow his agent to pursue a contract worth $60M a year. It will destroy the San Francisco locker room."

Since taking over as a starter, Purdy ranks fourth in QBR (69.3), seventh in passing touchdowns (61) and first in pass yards per attempt (8.9).

Being the last overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Purdy's contract ranks amongst one of the lowest of all 115 quarterbacks in the NFL. In fact, his contract ranks 85th out of the 115, according to overthecap.com.

Purdy signed a four-year, $3.7 million rookie contract with the 49ers in 2022. The 49ers could extend him this offseason or wait out another year to see if he improves his play from this season.

The 49ers could also franchise tag him before he becomes a free agent and work on a long-term deal that off-season. Purdy will get paid, but it's anybody's guess as to how much he will be offered by the 49ers or another team.
