The San Francisco 49ers, who clinched a Super Bowl berth last season, have missed a playoff appearance this year after a season marred by injuries, setbacks and disappointments. While the fans brace for an early offseason, the team’s owner, Jed York, is emphatically backing head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch.

Both will return next season, York confirmed to The San Francisco Standard before the 49ers' game against the Detroit Lions on Monday night.

"They’re not going anywhere," York said.

Shanahan led the team to two NFC Championship appearances and one Super Bowl during his tenure since 2017.

Like York, Shanahan has also dismissed any such rumors.

"I don't want to be any place in the world more than here," the 49ers asserted earlier this month.

GM John Lynch, equally committed to the 49ers, dismissed the chatter as "comical" and pointed to the team's recent success of four division titles in the last five years.

"The standard here is to win championships, and we've fallen short of that, but we have an excellent head coach," Lynch said.

The San Francisco 49ers are missing the postseason for the first time since 2020.

What went wrong with the San Francisco 49ers who were once kings of the NFC West?

The cracks began to show early in the 2024 season after a loss to the Los Angeles Rams. In spite of holding leads in all three divisional losses by Week 6, they failed to seal the deal. Ironically, the 49ers started losing to teams they had dominated in recent years.

Reasons? Inconsistent offense, porous defense and a failure to execute in key moments.

By Week 13, things had spiraled further. Injuries plagued the roster. In a loss to the Buffalo Bills, Christian McCaffrey and Fred Warner went down with injuries. Moreover, missing more important players like Nick Bosa and Trent Williams has been a major setback.

For the first time in years, San Francisco neither couldn’t rely on their dominant defense or their explosive offense. In spite of having stars like TE George Kittle and WR Deebo Samuel, the team failed to pull off consistent performances.

Moreover, with WR Brandon Aiyuk out with injuries, the offensive struggles just compounded.
