Some had hoped that Colorado coach Deion Sanders could end up as Jerry Jones' right-hand man for the Dallas Cowboys. However, the former star player turned coach now has a realistic opportunity with the Cowboys moving on from Mike McCarthy. What once was a pipe dream now at least has one major domino falling that makes the move more possible than it was even a week ago.

Fox News reported Monday that Sanders and Jones have had a conversation, and per ESPN, the dialogue between the two is set to continue in the coming days. It is pertinent to note that Sanders, who played for the Cowboys and won a Super Bowl with the team, reiterated his desire to stay in Boulder while speaking to ESPN last night.

That said, there are five reasons why Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders would not be the right fit in Dallas.

Reasons why Deion Sanders to Cowboys could be disaster in the making

#1 - Hasn't coached in the NFL

Sanders wouldn't work with the Cowboys because he has never coached in the NFL. He's spent the last few years crafting messages for players in their teens and early 20s. Put simply, those messages would fall on deaf ears when directing them at players in their late 20s and 30s. The failed messaging would show up on the scoreboard in games.

#2 - Hasn't demonstrated playoff-caliber coaching

The problem with the Cowboys has been the playoffs. 2025 marks 30 years since the franchise won the Super Bowl. Expecting a coach who hasn't even been to a national championship to do so is asking quite a lot.

While he could get the team to the playoffs once or twice based on the talent of his roster alone, he would be in a worse position in terms of experience than Mike McCarthy, who has won a Super Bowl. The inexperience would show.

#3 - Might pressure Cowboys to draft Shedeur Sanders

While this would be seemingly impossible at face value, there's a potential path to Shedeur Sanders. The Cowboys' draft position is at 12th overall (per Cowboys media), close enough for the team to make a trade for the ages, likely including Dak Prescott in the deal. At least, that is what Deion Sanders might want.

It might ruin the Cowboys and their recent all-in investment with the quarterback, but as long as Deion Sanders gets his son, the Cowboys' immediate consequences would be beside the point.

#4 - Risks creating power struggle

Even if Sanders didn't end up coaching his son in the NFL as the Dallas Cowboys coach, the conversations about adding Shedeur Sanders could trigger a power struggle in the organization. If that happens, what happens on the gridiron would come second. This is how franchises can fall.

#5 - Expectations would be too high

If Deion Sanders were to join the Cowboys, Jerry Jones would expect results soon. After paying CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott, Jones has every reason to believe he has done enough to get over the hump. If the Cowboys slump, it would be on the coach. Jones might even go so far as to believe Sanders to be the final piece.

If that's the case, the pressure would be immense in September to start hot. This, plus Sanders' inexperience, is a recipe for a downward spiral.
