It pays to play baseball, just ask Juan Soto. After becoming a free agent this offseason, Soto was the most intriguing player this offseason and was expected to sign a record-breaking contract.
That came true Sunday when Soto signed a 15-year deal worth $765 million with the New York Mets. This surpassed Shohei Ohtani's 10-year, $700 million contract signed last year to become the largest contract in sports history.
Soto's contract is so big that he will make more money in his new 15-year deal than LeBron James and Tom Brady's combined career earnings as players in the NBA and NFL, respectively. James and Brady's have made a combined $761 million, which is four million less than what Soto will earn.

Fans couldn't believe the news of Soto's big contract. Here's how fans reacted:
"Soto’s contract is indeed very impressive. Now compare how much money LeBron and Tom Brady have made in endorsements," a fan wrote.
"If Quarterbacks and Basketball Players could get 15 years contracts it’ll blow these baseball contracts out the water and they would be billionaires," a fan said.
"Thats crazy!! How can they can earn more than players that they are considerated the GOATS," a fan said.
Other fans pointed out how ridiculous it is to pay one person all that money. More fans pointed out that they think the contract is ridiculous and don't think one single athlete is worth that much.
Here's how other fans reacted to the Soto's big contract:
"Can anyone explain how he’s making more than Ohtani? Soto is a very good player, but outside of his plate discipline, he’s not elite at any given area of the game," a fan wrote.
"No player is worth that much money, lol," a fan said.
"Athletes get payed entirely too much. This is Fn ridiculous lol," a fan wrote.
What is the largest deal in NFL history?
In the 2020 offseason, Patrick Mahomes signed a 10-year extension worth $477 million with another $26 million in potential bonuses for a total of $503 million with the Kansas City Chiefs.
The contract value is listed as a 10-year deal worth $450 million. At the time of the signing, it was the largest contract in the history of sports, not just the NFL. After Juan Soto's recent deal, Mahomes' contract ranks as the fifth-largest sports contract in history.
Baseball players typically have the highest contracts for big contract extensions, because their deals are usually longer (Soto's 15-year deal compared to Mahomes' 10-year deal.)
It will be a while before an NFL players sniffs a total contract value of half a billion.
