"Bad move from a poverty franchise"- NFL fans slam Giants for franchise tagging Saquon Barkley

Barkley has been franchise tagged by the Giants

The franchise tag deadline day has seen several deals get flushed out with Saquon Barkley and the New York Giants also featuring in the drama. The first domino to fall was quarterback Daniel Jones and his four-year, $160 million deal.

Then shortly after, running back Barkley was franchise tagged by the Giants. This will see him earn a little over $10 million for the 2023 season. Barkley had a superb 2022 season, rushing for a career-high 1,312 yards along with 10 touchdowns.

However, fans weren't happy with the Giants as they signed Jones over Barkley, with many seeing the running back as a better option. One NFL fan stated that the Giants are a 'poverty' franchise for doing so.

Other fans gave their two cents on the deal and most aren't happy.

So, it appears that not many Giants fans are happy with the news of Barkley being tagged and Jones getting a long-term deal.

Given that Barkley's tag is non-exclusive, other teams can negotiate with the running back, and if a deal can be agreed upon, the Giants will receive two first-round picks.

Generally, running backs find it hard to secure long-term deals. Ezekiel Elliott signed a six-year, $90 million deal with the Dallas Cowboys but after a season or two, that was seen as a mistake.

Given that the shelf life of a running back in the NFL is rather short, the turnover for them is quite high. The physical hits that running backs cop every week is what leads to a quicker decline than players in other positions.

For Saquon Barkley, playing on the tag is good money-wise, but contract wise it isn't. If the Giants weren't willing to offer a long-term deal now, then they likely won't again next year too.

For many, the non-exclusive franchise tag means one thing: Saquon Barkley's time in New York is rapidly coming to an end.
