The first season of Caleb Williams in the NFL has not gone up to plan. After a good start to 2024 by the Chicago Bears, who were 4-2 at some point, their season unraveled after a loss to the Washington Commanders in a hail mary. From there, they have lost eight straight games.

This was never going to be a season where the Bears would be contenders. Their primary objective was to develop Caleb Williams as best as they could. After picking him, the team used their next two draft picks on offensive players. One of them, however, has not worked out as expected.

Offensive tackle Kiran Amegadije has replaced starter Braxton Jones, who missed Week 15's Monday Night Football game with a concussion. He had an awful pass protection rep, and NFL fans were amazed to see how he could even be on the field with such technique:

"Kiran Amegadjie getting exposed at LT doesn’t reflect well on Ryan Poles. Just doesn’t", said one fan.
"Another gem draft pick by Ryan Poles, followed by Velus Jones. Poles loves drafting below-average offensive linemen, like he was as an NFL player, and thinks he can turn them into All-Pros. It’s disgusting", another criticized.
"He doesn't punch or slide his feet. That should be a minimum to be drafted but Poles missed", a third said.

Amegadije was a third-round pick out of Yale. He wasn't expected to be a starter this season, with the Bears looking at him more like a long-term project and a swing tackle in giving games. This is not good protection for Caleb Williams.

Caleb Williams' stats in the 2024 season

Even in an awful year for the franchise, with head coach Matt Eberflus becoming the first head coach to be fired midseason in more than 100 years of history, the rookie has put together some respectable numbers.

Williams has 2,746 passing yards, 16 touchdowns and just nine interceptions, while also adding 405 rushing yards without touchdowns. It's normal for rookie quarterbacks to have tough first seasons, and with the Bears' superstar, it was no different.
