"Bears version of Phil Jackson coming in" - Chicago fans hyped up over Ben Johnson's plans for Caleb Williams' development 

The Chicago Bears fended off competition from several suitors and won the Ben Johnson sweepstakes, hiring the former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator to be the franchise's new head coach.

The 38-year-old's exceptional job improving quarterback Jared Goff and the Lions' offense made him the top candidate for most teams looking for a new head coach. However, he picked the Bears as the rebuilding job in Chicago wasn't as big as in other places.

During his introductory press conference, Johnson made it no secret that Caleb Williams was one of the primary reasons why he passed on other opportunities and chose the Bears. He explained how critical it is to have a stellar signal-caller and claimed that the quarterback's development will be a point of emphasis for him as a head coach. He said:

“It’s clear that modern football in the NFL is quarterback-driven... You can look at analytics, right now quarterback success is a higher predictor of winning and losing than turnover ratio — which has been for 20-plus years... There is no doubt, Caleb played a large component into my decision. He is a phenomenal talent that had, as many quarterbacks do, an up-and-down rookie year. Where I see my role is as a supporter of him. This offense will be calibrated with him in mind."

Caleb Williams shares thoughts on Ben Johnson joining the Bears

The Bears' top priority this offseason was to hire a coach who could help Caleb Williams fulfill his potential and they managed to land the best man available for the job in Ben Johnson. The quarterback has already met with his new head coach and revealed he's excited to learn and grow under his tutelage. He told reporters:

“You don’t have cool, creative things like that without somebody like him obviously being such a creative mind... You can see the competitiveness in [Johnson's] eyes and the fire in his eyes. It was really cool seeing that.”

Williams' rookie season with the Bears did not pan out as he had hoped. However, there's palpable excitement about the quarterback and the team's future.
