The Cincinnati Bengals were among the four teams to feature in the new in-season Hard Knocks, which debuted on Tuesday and has followed all four AFC North teams throughout their seasons, changing the offseason format that made Hard Knocks so famous.

In one of the most intriguing scenes of the first episode, a team meeting during Cincinnati's poor run of form had offensive superstars Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase looking upset with head coach Zac Taylor. With the two players having stellar individual seasons, the Bengals' 4-8 record is not sitting well.

During the show's premiere, NFL fans couldn't help but notice the expressions on the faces of Burrow and Chase while Taylor spoke during a team meeting. It was clear that they were frustrated with the moment and with their coach:

"It’s time for Cincinnati to do the right thing and free them", said one fan.
"Our boys are in purgatory. Lord, please deliver them from this hell", said another.
"Boys are fed up," a third one said.

The Bengals are in the middle of a three-game losing streak, losing four out of the past five. In a year where Burrow and Chase are among the league's leaders in their respective categories, this negative record is a source of extreme frustration.

Can the Bengals still make the 2024 playoffs?

Mathematically, yes, but the truth is that they're virtually eliminated. With a 4-8 record and five games to go, they would have to close a four-game deficit to the Denver Broncos, the 7th seed, to make the playoffs as a wild card.

They are mathematically eliminated from the AFC North contention. Although they could tie the Steelers and the Ravens with their number of wins, tiebreakers would be favorable to Baltimore in this specific case.

Cincinnati would have to turn into a powerhouse to run the table and still finish with a positive, 9-8 record. But their recent appearances inspire no confidence in doing so, allowing at least 34 points in each of the past three games. This season is all but over, and Zac Taylor's job is in danger.
