Bill Belichick sent shock waves around the NFL world when it was revealed that he was joining the University of North Carolina. Most fans and analysts knew that he wanted to coach again and would most probably get the chance to do so, but no one could have imagined that it would be a college team where he would get to live his old life again.

Many analysts and fans wondered why the eight-time Super Bowl winner would choose to go to college when most of the college tacticians' dreams are to coach an NFL team. ESPN's Seth Wickersham explored the possible reasons why the 72-year-old took this decision.

One reason was that apart from the Atlanta Falcons, no other NFL team had shown seriousness in trying to hire him. He interviewed twice with the Falcons, but ultimately, talks fell apart, and the 2024 season started without him joining an NFL team. Instead, he kept himself busy with his several media gigs.

However, another major reason why Belichick himself wasn't too keen on returning to the national league was because of how much it had deteriorated. A close confidant of Bill Belichick revealed that he had become "disgusted" with the NFL.

"This is a big f**k you to the NFL," another Belichick confidant revealed.

Earlier on an episode of the "Pat McAfee Show," Belichick had dropped hints about being asked "asinine questions" by team owners who wanted to hire him. Another confidant said that they had become "tired of the stupidness" of the NFL.

How much will Bill Belichick earn as UNC coach?

While Bill Belichick held the title of the highest-paid coach in the NFL, he earned $20 million during his final year at New England. Based on reports, the three-year contract he signed with the college is worth $10 million per year.

In a statement, the former New England Patriots coach said that he had always wanted to coach in college, and this was his dream coming true.

"I grew up around college football with my dad and treasured those times," Belichick said in the press release, adding, "I have always wanted to coach in college and now I look forward to building the football program in Chapel Hill."

Will Belichick have better luck at UNC than he did in the final two years in New England without Tom Brady or has the coach truly lost his mojo?
