"Absolutely atrocious" - Raheem Morris grilled by Falcons fans for terrible clock management vs. Commanders - Source: Imagn

Following the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' blowout win over the Carolina Panthers, the Atlanta Falcons desperately needed a victory over the Washington Commanders on Sunday Night Football to remain in control of the race for the NFC South division title.

With under five minutes left, they trailed by seven and needed a touchdown drive to level the scores. Rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. answered his team's call and converted twice on fourth down in a 13-play, 78-yard drive that culminated in a touchdown pass to tight end Kyle Pitts.

The Falcons' defense then forced a three-and-out and got the ball back in Penix's hands with 40 seconds left on the clock. The quarterback threw a dime to wide receiver Darnell Mooney that advanced the ball to Atlanta's 44-yard line.

However, for reasons unknown, head coach Raheem Morris did not call one of the Falcons' two remaining timeouts and let nearly 15 seconds burn off the clock before the ball was snapped again. Atlanta could get only three plays off due to their coach's oversight.

It proved to be costly as the Falcons could only set up a 56-yard field goal attempt for Riley Patterson, whose kick was heading in the right direction but didn't have enough legs to go past the uprights, sending the game to overtime.

The Commanders won the coin toss and elected to receive, giving quarterback Jayden Daniels an opportunity to engineer a second game-winning drive in as many weeks and he did not disappoint. Washington embarked on a 14-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to end the game.

Fans on social media lashed out at Morris for his decision to save a timeout and costing his team precious time that could have come in handy to get a few more yards:

Some fans claimed his poor time management skills have cost the Falcons enough and he should be relieved of his duties as the team's head coach:

"Fire Raheem Morris for not understanding how timeouts work alone" - Wrote @YZR_Fantasy
"Fire Raheem Morris before he gets on the flight. That was the worst clock management throughout a game I’ve ever witnessed" - Claimed @XanJackson47
"Fire Raheem Morris. Joke of a coach. Sit there and do nothing all game and don’t know how to call a timeout. Absolutely pitiful. Season ending decision making." - Said @seanking0706

Falcons playoff odds: Raheem Morris and Co. no longer control their destiny

The Falcons' loss to the Commanders saw them drop to 8-8 and slip to second in the NFC South standings behind the 9-7 Buccaneers.

Atlanta now has to beat the Carolina Panthers in Week 18 and hope Tampa Bay loses its final game of the season. The Falcons have beaten the Buccaneers twice this year and hold the tiebreaker over them. If both teams finish with the same record, they will finish above Tampa Bay.

However, the Buccaneers are facing the New Orleans Saints in Week 18, who have lost three straight games and lost 51-27 to Tampa Bay in the two teams' first duel this season.

The Falcons can still make the playoffs but the odds are looking bleak.
