Smith was set to become a free agent, but the two sides had optimism after a successful 2022-23 season that he'd return to the team again this year on a new deal or on the franchise tag. As part of his contract, Smith will earn $52 million in his first season. Prior to then, he earned $17.4 million in his career, and he will triple his career earnings in the next season with Seattle.

While the Seahawks traded Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos, Smith became their starting quarterback for the season and led them to a 9-8 regular-season record. He earned the Seahawks a playoff berth, despite losing in the first round to their rivals, the San Francsico 49ers.

Smith set career-highs in passing yards (4,282) touchdowns (30) and rushing yards (366), while leading the league in completion percantage (69.8)

Smith will continue for the next three seasons of his career with the Seahawks and has finally established himself as a franchise quarterback.

Seattle holds the No. 5 pick in the 2023 NFL draft and is now unlikely to use that pick on a quarterback.
