Bryce Young is a former Heisman Trophy winner from Alabama who appears to have the qualitative factors that set him apart from others in his class. He looks to be the quarterback to select at the upcoming 2023 NFL draft.

The NFL is paying close attention to Young as the scouting combine draws near. That has once again brought up the subject of what's essentially the only chink in his otherwise flawless armor: his stature. According to a recent story, the former Heisman winner is 5' 10.5", so some franchises might be reluctant to gamble on him due to his height.

Todd McShay, an ESPN draft and personnel analyst, predicts that NFL franchises could think long and hard before selecting Young with a top-round pick. McShay said,

"If I'm a GM, I'm terrified to death of drafting him."

Could Bryce Young be a successful NFL QB?

The physical attributes of entering quarterbacks are sometimes an issue for the NFL, as several of the best prospects are 6' 2" or taller and weigh at least 220 pounds.

Although a shorter quarterback might be able to compensate for his modest stature with other attributes, GMs and coaches often prefer taller ones.

General managers and coaches prefer a quarterback who's able to look well over the line of scrimmage and effortlessly identify free receivers down the field. To determine whether receivers are open, a diminutive quarterback must do more to find out the angles and gaps.

Of course, that doesn't mean that undersized quarterbacks can't succeed in the NFL, but they're not as likely to succeed as their taller counterparts. Simply put, the bridge is considerably more dangerous to cross for shorter QBs. Injuries can be tougher to avoid, and throws are more likely to be swatted down. All these issues can be overcomes, but it's not simple.

The Chicago Bears, who have the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft, are contemplating whether to keep or trade it. They have Justin Fields, so they're not expected to spend their first-round selection on Bryce Young.

Kyler Murray holds the distinction of being the league's shortest quarterback. Young (5' 10.5"), though, is slightly taller than Murray.

Bryce Young was the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner and ended his two seasons as a starting QB at the collegiate level with 8,385 total yards and 86 total TDs. Apart from his physical characteristics, Young has an undeniable play-calling aptitude.

Russ Wilson is the role model Bryce Young should strive to emulate. Wilson is heavier, but the two have identical frames, and their arms are equivalent. That's the path Young should look to take in his career to mitigate his relatively short stature.
