Republican nominee Herschel Walker is running to replace incumbent Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock in the Georgia Senate race this year. As scrutiny has fallen on both the contestants, much of their private lives have come to the forefront. Walker has been accused of domestic violence, paying for abortions, even though he wishes to ban it, and going against family values by having multiple children with different partners. That is not what he had in mind when he looked to leverage his fame in Georgia as the star college football running back from the state.

Now, he is again in the limelight as his pronouncements on the campaign trail seem contrary to the life he lives. He recently mentioned that he objects to settling student debt using taxpayer money, because,

“I have enough problems paying my own debt, now I gotta pay somebody else’s debt.”

Now, by virtue of his fame as perhaps the greatest college footballer of all time and also as a professional footballer, Herschel Walker is a multimillionaire. While his exact net worth is unknown, he is estimated to be between $29 million and $65 million. It prompted ridicule from the general public as with such a fortune, he should find it impossible to understand the crisis of student debt. And social media took him up on it in the most hilarious way possible.

Herschel Walker secures the backing of Vince Dooley

Herschel Walker's candidacy has been closely tied to former president Donald Trump, who met the football star as owner of the New Jersey Generals in the USFL. Now, another of his mentors has come out to endorse Walker in the race.

Former University of Georgia head coach Vince Dooley, under whom Herschel Walker played running back, endorsed him in the Senate race. He said,

"Herschel has always been challenged about doing things that people thought he wasn't capable of doing. He wants to be the best, and he's driven to do that. He's a real patriot of this country. He loves the United States of America... There is a need in this country, there is a need in this state for someone like Herschel."

An endorsement from a Georgia legend like Vince Dooley should generally hold tremendous sway. Whether Herschel Walker can use it without messing it up with his own campaign troubles remains to be seen.
