While there were calls for Jerod Mayo's firing while the season was underway, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft gave no indication that he would be fired. In fact, many reporters claimed that Mayo would return in 2025 before the team took a final decision on whether he would be a long-term successor to Bill Belichick.
On Sunday, going into their season finale against their divisional rivals, the Buffalo Bills, the team held the first pick in the 2025 NFL draft. While many thought that the team would tank so that they could hold on to their draft number, the Pats won surprisingly 23-16 against the formidable Bills, who had previously humbled some of the strongest teams this season: the Kansas City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions.
Instead of being congratulated for his win, Robert Kraft fired Mayo, according to ESPN.

Patriots fans who wanted this for a long time finally felt relieved as they had been heard, albeit as the season ended. They took to social media to vent their feelings.
One fan said that the team should now dial up Mike Vrabel for the position.
"Call up Vrabel right now ✍️."
Another fan said that Mayo was being punished for winning and losing the No. 1 draft pick.
"BOB KRAFT WANTED THE FIRST OVERALL PICK 😭."
Other fans also chimed in with their reactions.
"Patriots wasted no time 😭" one fan said.
"I mean he needed to lose today," another fan remarked.
"I heard there’s a hof head coach on the market," one fan said.
"They are DEFINITELY going after Ben Johnson!" another fan commented.
What did Robert Kraft say while firing Jerod Mayo?
In the statement, Robert Kraft admitted that firing Mayo was “one of the hardest” decisions he had to take. He revealed that he had hurriedly appointed Mayo as the next HC because he was scared other teams might grab him.
However, the trajectory of the season made him realize that Mayo might not be the HC for his Patriots.
“We have tremendous fans who expect and deserve a better product than we have delivered in recent years. I apologize for that. I have given much thought and consideration as to what actions I can take to expedite our return to championship contention and determined this move was the best option at this time.”
As the team enters its off-season could Kraft pay heed to his fans' demands and appoint Mike Vrabel as the Patriots’ next HC?
