Josh Allen met Patrick Mahomes for the fourth postseason in five years during Sunday's AFC Championship Game. He lost for the fourth time, and one shot succinctly explains the heartbreak in him.
After Samaje Perine confirmed the Kansas City Chiefs' 32-29 win with a 17-yard catch, CBS's cameras caught the Buffalo Bills quarterback with a tired and defeated look on his face. He had completed 22 of his 34 passing attempts for 237 yards and two touchdowns but also committed two crucial turnovers on downs in the fourth quarter.
The first came right early in the period when he attempted to rush through the left side with one yard needed but was stopped by Nic Bolton. Mahomes rushed for a touchdown on the ensuing drive and also completed a two-pointer to Justin Watson.

The second, and deciding one, came just before the two-minute mark. Needing five yards to enter enemy territory, Allen tried a deep pass to sophomore tight end Dalton Kincaid, who failed to catch the ball against single coverage by George Karlaftis. The Chiefs then reached the 18 on the next drive to win the game.

After the game, a desolate Joah Allen faced the media one last time to discuss the loss. He began:
“It’s not fun. But to be the champs, you gotta beat the champs. And we didn’t do it tonight.”
The next question that came up was the loss-sealing incompletion to Dalton Kincaid. He broke it down as follows:
“They gave a good look. Didn’t see anything in my first cadence. We were sliding left, corner came.”
Of course, making it this far represents quite the achievement for the Bills, whom early in the new league year analysts thought were rebuilding after losing multiple contributors like Stefon Diggs, Jordan Poyer, and Micah Hyde. But when asked about the notion of overachieving, Allen was blunt:
“You can either get it done or you can’t, and we didn’t.”
The Bills will now enter the offseason holding the Draft’s 30th overall pick.
