Can NFL games be played in snow?

NFL players are used to playing in some of the toughest weather, be it snow, wind, or cold. Apart from all the venues, Cleveland and Buffalo experience some of the harshest weather conditions in December due to high amounts of snowfall.

Snow and cold winds are in the predictions for the Ravens-Browns and the Dolphins-Bills game this week. Will the games get canceled if there is a snowfall?

As long as the stadium is useable and people can enter safely, games will be played. Whether the temperature is below zero or there is a lot of precipitation in the vicinity, NFL games hardly get canceled.

If necessary, games have been rescheduled to new dates and places over the years. If a stadium is deemed unfit to play, games are frequently moved to the opponent's stadium or to a completely neutral location, which might be a college stadium or a neighboring NFL stadium.

While extreme weather has disrupted the preseason and regular season games, it has impacted no individual playoff games to date.

The Buffalo Bills recently played against the Cleveland Browns in Week 11. The game was scheduled to be played at Highmark Stadium but was moved to Detroit's Ford Field because of a heavy snowfall.

Highmark Stadium is an open-air venue that received several feet of snow just days before the Week 11 game. Bills posted the photographs on Twitter, and we can only imagine what the field staff went through while clearing the stadium.

In the past, the NFL has moved or postponed games due to inclement weather. During the 2017 AFC playoffs, an ice storm postponed the Steelers-Chiefs’ playoff game from 1:05 pm ET to 8:30 pm ET.

The last time a game was postponed was because of blizzard-like conditions that occurred in 2014, when the Jets and Bills´ Week 12 game at Ford Field in Detroit was moved from Sunday afternoon to Monday night.

Here are some tricks a player uses to keep themselves warm as temperatures drop towards zero degrees:

• NFL players use vaseline and rub it all over their arms and face. It helps to block the cold wind.
• A cup of hot chocolate before the game and a cup of chicken broth in between breaks help them to stay warm.
• They use pairs of hand warmers during the game. They keep changing it as they don't last an entire game.
• Players can use the sideline heaters to warm themselves during the breaks.
• They use double layer of socks and gloves to avoid numb hands and feet.
• Heated bench and helmet warmers also help a lot during harsh winter weather.
