McCaffrey, who signed a two-year extension in June and became the NFL's highest-paid running back with his $38 million contract, suffered a calf and Achilles injury during training camp.

Fans were hopeful he would return for the regular season after missing preseason, but that didn't happen. Instead, the 49ers placed him on IR.

Now, even worse news has surfaced about the All-Pro, according to Dov Kleiman on X.

Kyle Shanahan had said there was a need to protect Christian McCaffrey "from himself"

Niners coach Kyle Shanahan had warned against something like this. During the offseason, the HC told reporters that one big goal for the Niners would be to make Christian McCaffrey carry the ball less in the 2024 season to prevent any major injuries.

“We have to protect Christian from himself. He doesn’t like to ever come out no matter what the situation is and I do think that’s something we could protect him with more." (H/T The Athletic)

McCaffrey has missed the 49ers' first four games this season. In his absence, San Francisco has gone 2-2 and will face the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5.
