There has been no shortage of speculation around the Dallas Cowboys since general manager Jerry Jones decided to bite the bullet and part ways with Mike McCarthy on Monday.

McCarthy coached the team for five years and left Dallas with a 49-35 record and just one win in the playoffs. Given McCarthy was hired to do what Jason Garrett couldn't (win in the playoffs), the Cowboys will now have to start over but have more than a few pieces to build a competitive roster around including the likes of Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons.

One man who has been linked with the Cowboys all season long, and now even more so, is Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders. Jones reached out to Sanders on Monday after firing McCarthy. Prime Time Sanders later told ESPN:

“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing. I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”

It appears All-Pro WR Lamb is also on board with Sanders coaching in Dallas. Lamb hit 'like' on an Instagram post from NFL insider Jordan Schultz stating that Jones has already reached out to the enigmatic college football head coach to fill the vacancy in Dallas.

Who else could the Dallas Cowboys look at to take over as head coach?

Sanders reportedly has an $8 million buyout clause in his contract, similar to the one Bill Belichick has in his contract with UNC. If Dallas were to pay Colorado that $8 million, it would free Sanders up from his duties in Boulder to coach the Cowboys.

If Jones and Sanders don't come to an agreement, speculation seems to point to one of two candidates at the moment:

  1. Former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who is currently with the Philadelphia Eagles
  2. Former All-Pro tight end Jason Witten, who is currently coaching the Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas.

Other candidates Dallas could potentially look at include former Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and Minnesota Vikings DC Brian Flores.
