A college football insider is not sold on Bill Belichick becoming the next North Carolina Tar Heels coach. Belichick has reportedly shown interest in joining the program and is close to signing a deal. His last coaching job was with the New England Patriots, which he held for 24 years, winning six Super Bowls. CBS Sports' Josh Pate is unsure if the accomplished NFL coach can be effective in college football today.
On Wednesday, NFL insider Jonathan Jones reported on X/Twitter that North Carolina is still working on a deal to acquire the former Super Bowl winner to coach next season.
On the "Josh Pate's College Football Show," the college football insider spoke about the reports of Belichick taking the UNC coaching position. Pate said he doesn't know what the former New England general manager could do for North Carolina that is overtly special.

"I didn't ask what's special about his Wikipedia page," Pate said. "I didn't ask what's special about the fistfuls of rings that he has. I didn't ask anything about the past.
"I'm asking as it's related to being a college football head coach. 2025 and beyond at a second-tier institution football-wise in the third- or fourth-best conference in America right now. What is it that's revolutionary or groundbreaking that he is going to bring to the table?"
"This is old news": Josh Pate calls out UNC's reason behind seeking Bill Belichick
College football insider Josh Pate believes North Carolina thinks Bill Belichick will hire the right staff and recruit players to compete with other teams. However, Pate feels there are people already within the program who could do it.
"This is old news," Pate said. "Like, understanding that you have to construct a college football front office to mirror the NFL and bringing NFL people in to either consult with or outright build it for you, that's old news. That's old news. That's not revolutionary."
Pate added that he is unsure if the six-time Super Bowl winner has the right recruiting chops for the Tar Heels.
"So, next, you bring in some revolutionary offense in?" Pate said. "You bring in some revolutionary defense in? Do you have a reliability or connectability with high school prospective student-athletes that your peers in the conference don't have? I'm open to be sold on that, by the way. I just don't necessarily think that's Bill Belichick's forte."
Pate concluded his criticism by advising that the former Patriots coach must take a unique approach to running the team if he intends to join the Tar Heels.
