Quarterback Easton Stick was the target of Chargers' fans' ire after he struggled in his first preseason game of 2024 against the Seahawks. As is to be expected, he was rusty and kept missing targets as he looked to get rid of the cobwebs.
But Chargers fans were not in a mood to give him too much grace. First of all, he is a holdover of the previous era. He has been with the team since 2019. In that period, the fans have seen their team underachieve relative to their talent, even as their Los Angeles neighbors claimed the Super Bowl.
Secondly, Justin Herbert's injury this offseason is making people nervous. His foot injury is likely to heal enough so that he is back in Week 1 of the 2024 regular season but he is still reportedly in a boot currently. If the timeline changes even slightly, that could make Easton Stick the starter.
And that is what is making Chargers fans jittery. They want a backup quarterback who can lead in the absence of Herbert. Some even went so far as to say that Easton Stick should be cut based on his limited time in preseason alone. They took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to air their reactions. Here are some of the posts from the social media platform.

Fans were vociferous that Easton Stick should be cut by the time the game ended, even if that is an unlikely proposition. That sentiment was shared over and over again on X. Here are some of those responses:
"I better see Easton Stick get cut after this game, cause ain't no doggone way he's a #2 in this league. Sheesh!"
"The day the Chargers cut Easton Stick is the day we become better"
"Easton stick literally throwing hospital passes, cut him immediately lmfaooo"
Easton Stick and Chargers struggle offensively in loss to Seahawks
Preseason is not a great indicator of how the regular season will go. But what would have worried the Chargers fans is how toothless their entire offense looked. The players' quality, or lack thereof, is something that can be debated but neither Easton Stick nor his compatriots seemed comfortable in the style of offense under new head coach Jim Harbaugh.
They lost 16-3 to the Seahawks in their first game of the 2024 preseason and their only points came in the second quarter. They started slowly, could not rally from a deficit after halftime, and finished with a whimper. If Justin Herbert misses the beginning of the season, or if in the worst-case scenario, he gets injured, this Los Angeles team might really struggle in a division that contains the Chiefs, Raiders, and Broncos.
Cutting Easton Stick and getting someone who is more comfortable with the system might be a good start to getting some insurance for the Chargers beyond their starting quarterback. One hears that Colin Kaepernick, who took the 49ers to the Super Bowl working under Jim Harbaugh, is free and reportedly interested in making a return to the NFL.
