Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are going to yet another Super Bowl after a 32-29 victory over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship game. It was a fabulous performance from their entire offense as they tore apart the opposition's defense on multiple occasions with the quarterback in inspired form with both his arm and his feet.
In the fourth quarter, when the Bills were up 22-21, Patrick Mahomes helped the Chiefs retake the lead after scoring a touchdown on a first-and-goal. He faked a handoff to the running back and then took off on a designed run to enter the endzone. He was understandably pumped and decided to celebrate by spiking the ball.
But instead of the ball neatly hitting the ground, it went beyond the sideline. A quarterback who has a history of making big throws could not get past his habits and make a forced incompletion as much as he tried to.

Now Kansas City is calling on Travis Kelce to come to his teammate's aid. The tight end frequently spikes the ball after scoring a touchdown and he has enough practice because of how often he gets into the endzone. The Chiefs put out a post on X/Twitter asking the player they gave a $34.25 million contract to take on this additional responsibility of helping his quarterback:
"Help @tkelce, the man (Mahomes) needs spiking lessons"
Patrick Mahomes pokes fun at himself for failed spike during Chiefs' AFC Championship victory over Bills
With a phenomenal victory in their back pocket, it was easy for Patrick Mahomes to make light of his spiking efforts on social media. He posted on X/Twitter, writing,
"I also apologize. That is why i dont try to spike the ball."
One assumes his apology will be well-received in the Chiefs kingdom as he has just led his team to yet another Super Bowl. In the seven years that he has been the starter in Kansas City, he has made it to the AFC Championship every single year and will now play in his fifth Super Bowl in New Orleans. The only two times he lost came in overtime against Tom Brady and Joe Burrow.
This is a phenomenal return for the quarterback and he now has a chance to win his fourth Super Bowl before turning 30. He is firmly in the GOAT conversation and a victory in the title game this year will make him the first quarterback to win three straight championships since the AFL-NFL merger. If the only thing one can complain about Patrick Mahomes is him spiking the ball after a touchdown, one assumes that the Chiefs' fans will be on board with it.
