The Kansas City Chiefs are playing the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3's Sunday Night Football. While the challenge is already difficult enough with Kirk Cousins under center, having questionable calls going against you isn't going to help your cause - and the team has a right to be upset.

Midway through the second quarter, Cousins threw a deep pass looking for Drake London in a third down. The ball was thrown just ahead of the receiver, and he couldn't make the grab - but a new set of downs was still given following a roughing the passer call on Chris Jones.

The replays did show that Jones touched Cousins, but there was no extra force or deliberated late hit. NFL fans were fuming with the call, not believing that such a ticky-tacky play was called in a sport where hits are part of the game:

Jones is widely considered the best interior defensive lineman in the league and his performances to start the season have been great. However, to see such a questionable call in an important play ruffled some feathers with the Chiefs fans in an understandable manner.

Chris Jones and Chiefs extended their deal in 2024

Chris Jones re-signed with the Kansas City Chiefs for a five-year, $158.75 million extension. He's a special player, and you only need to look at the previous playoffs to confirm it. Who created the pressure on Josh Allen's final throw and prevented the touchdown in the Divisional Round? No. 95.

Cut to the Super Bowl, overtime, third down for the San Francisco 49ers in the red zone. Who generates pressure on Brock Purdy? Chris Jones. This type of player is uncommon: he's cut out for success and glory, which in the NFL are essentially built from January onwards.

Of course, a five-year contract for a 30-year-old player is always scary, but if there's one thing Brett Veach knows, it is how to put together good deals. In 2027, Kansas City no longer owes Chris Jones any guaranteed money: if he continues to play at an elite level, the team will keep him; if not, life goes on.
