Brock Purdy has the skills and traits to be the San Francisco 49ers' quarterback of the future. But does that warrant a big-money, potentially record-breaking contract? According to Colin Cowherd, 49ers general manager John Lynch should think twice before making an obscene offer.

On his FS1 show "The Herd," the veteran sportscaster said:

"We've seen with Dak (Prescott) – if you pay A-plus money to a B to a B-plus quarterback, you can't have a legitimate roster. ... There's only one thing that guarantees you can't win Super Bowls: paying a B quarterback A-plus money. I feel, with Brock Purdy and certain quarterbacks, there's a lot of ifs, ands and buts."

He continued by making an analogy to when reducing Drew Brees' salary led to better results for the New Orleans Saints:

"Drew Brees, in his prime, took big money for a couple years. (New Orleans coach) Sean Payton and Drew Brees had two back-to-back mediocre years, restructured his deal. They end up in a Super Bowl."

To expound further, according to Cowherd, there are three tiers of quarterbacks when it comes to whether they deserve $50 million annually. The likes of Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen are in the first tier – the men who deserve it (in fact, nearly all of them are earning that much).

The next group is those whose general managers will not be offended by such a request: Jalen Hurts, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield and Jayden Daniels.

The last group is the rest of the quarterbacks, those who do not deserve a deal. Cowherd puts Purdy in this group.

Daniel Jeremiah, Rhett Lewis weigh in on Brock Purdy's contract situation

As the New Year looms, the Bruck Purdy saga will be one of the most interesting topics of the upcoming season. Another sportscaster who had some thoughts on Tuesday was Rhett Lewis, who said on the "Move the" Sticks podcast:

"I don't see a scenario in which (the 49ers are) not giving him a contract. I just don't know what it's going to look like to get done."

Meanwhile, co-host Daniel Jeremiah opined that the contract would involve "a whole lot of money":

"I think when you look at options in free agency, you look at options in this particular draft class, (in) which you wouldn't be able to get a guy anyway, I think it reinforces this notion of 'He's not so bad.' ... I think that's going to give them the comfort to pay him."

Purdy will become eligible for an extension on Monday, a day after the 49ers' regular-season finale at the Arizona Cardinals. He is set to earn $1.1 million in base salary next season.
