The Washington Commanders have been in dire need of a new place to play ever since multiple issues with and complaints about the condition of Northwest Stadium started emerging. However, that vision took a major blow on Thursday when a provision for the transfer site of RFK Stadium from the federal government to the District of Columbia municipal government was stricken from a spending bill.

There was much anger and lamentation at the development.

"Thanks Elon (Musk) and (Donald) Trump," one user tweeted.

More of those emotions can be seen in the following reactions.

"This has to be a joke," one commented.
"Maryland commanders forever smh lame as hell," another despaired.
"This is just stupidity," another raged.

DC mayor clarifies Elon Musk's claims about funding for new Commanders stadium

This omission had been foreshadowed by none other than District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser, who addressed Elon Musk's claim that the continuing resolution bill had a provision for the new stadium.

Talking to reporters on Thursday, she said:

"It was stated that the CR contains $3 billion for a stadium. All wrong. There are no federal dollars related to the transfer of RFK, and in fact, the legislation does not require or link at all to a stadium. We're talking about how the District can invest in removing blight.
"I don't know if there's another path this session. We've done all we're supposed to do, and this is the vehicle that has been identified – and agreed to by Democrats and Republicans. ... I agree with the president-elect on this point: We want to make our nation's capital the most beautiful capital in the world, so we have to move and free RFK."

The RFK site is, according to sources, the Commanders' preferred location for the new stadium, as it was where they had their greatest successes, winning three Super Bowls in 36 seasons of play (1961-96).

However, an alternative plan is to build beside Northwest Stadium. The franchise already owns the land there, and Maryland Governor Wes Moore has also been vocal about keeping the team in Landover.

Principal owner Josh Harris has said that he wants a new stadium by 2030, three years after the Commanders' lease at Northwest ends.
