The Washington Commanders are one win away from ending their four-year playoff drought following their thrilling 36-34 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Their odds looked dodgy after losing to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 12, which saw them drop to 7-5.

If the defeat wasn't bad enough, they also lost running back Austin Ekeler for four weeks after he was placed on IR due to the concussion he suffered on the game's final play.

Despite losing the veteran, Washington's offense did not see a dip in production. They ripped off three straight wins, beating the Tennessee Titans, New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia. They averaged a shade under 33 points in those victories.

As well as the offense has played without Ekeler, the Commanders (10-5) need him to stand a chance of venturing deep in the playoffs. Fortunately for them, there's good news about the running back's health.

Austin Ekeler injury update

During his media availability on Tuesday, Commanders coach Dan Quinn was asked whether Austin Ekeler would play again for the team this season. He replied that it's "absolutely possible" that he'd return to the field before the season ends.

Ekeler won't be eligible to return from IR for the Commanders' Week 17 game against the visiting Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. However, he can play in their final regular season game against the Dallas Cowboys.

But the Commanders likely wouldn't give him more than a series or two, enough to get his feet wet before pulling him out of the game to ensure he's healthy for their playoff run if they secure their berth with a win over the Falcons.

Austin Ekeler stats: How has the RB fared this season?

The Commanders signed Austin Ekeler as Brian Robinson's backup and to be a threat in the passing game out of the backfield. The veteran was playing his role to perfection before the concussion he suffered against the Cowboys landed him on the injured reserves list.

Ekeler has 355 yards and four rushing touchdowns on 74 carries and has caught 33 passes for 346 receiving yards. His 701 yards from scrimmage rank fourth for the Commanders behind wide receiver Terry McLaurin (1,031), running back Brian Robinson (873) and quarterback Jayden Daniels (737).

His stellar production, despite missing four games, highlights how critical he is to Washington's success. They have fared well without him over the last three games. However, their Super Bowl aspirations hinge on the veteran running back playing a key role in the playoffs.
