Washington Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu may have helped his team trounce the Detroit Lions, 45-31, in their divisional round matchup on Jan. 19, but he's paying a price for it.

NFL insider Tom Pelissero revealed that Luvu was fined $16,883 for a roughing the passer call against him, where he hit Lions quarterback Jared Goff in the head and neck area on a block following a pivotal pick-six. No flag was thrown on the play, but Luvu is being fined nonetheless. Additionally, Luvu is being fined an additional $16,883 for an illegal hip-drop tackle on running back Jahmyr Gibbs that occurred just a few plays later. No flag was thrown on that play either.

This brings Luvu's total in fines up to $33,766 for plays in which no flags were thrown during the game. Of course, the financial blow is likely lessened by the fact that Luvu and the Commanders are NFC Championship-bound this weekend, Jan. 26.

Frankie Luvu and the Commanders' impressive postseason run

The Washington Commanders have been one of the more compelling stories this NFL postseason. After amassing a 12-5 record during the regular season behind rookie quarterback sensation Jayden Daniels, the Commanders have been tearing through the NFL playoffs with sheer determination to reach the Lombardi Trophy.

The Commanders picked up a big Wild Card Round victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 23-20, to start things off. Next, Daniels and company pulled off a major upset against the Detroit Lions, thwarting the Super Bowl favorites. Now, the Commanders will face off against division rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship game, where the winner will punch their ticket to the Super Bowl.

Both teams have played each other twice this season already, splitting their series 1-1 ahead of Sunday's matchup. If Daniels can lead his team to victory over Jalen Hurts and Philadelphia, he'll become the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to start a Super Bowl. Of course, Washington shouldn't look past Philadelphia just yet, as the Eagles have been playoff regulars for the past several years, playing in a Super Bowl as recently as 2023 when they were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Eagles are equally motivated, as Jalen Hurts is seeking the first Super Bowl victory of his NFL career, as he wasn't yet on the team when the Eagles defeated the Tom Brady-led New England Patriots for the Lombardi Trophy in 2018. That Eagles squad was led by Nick Foles, who was filling in for the injured Carson Wentz that season.

The Washington Commanders will visit the Philadelphia Eagles for the NFC Championship game tomorrow (Sunday, January 26, 2025) from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
