Commanders release Carson Wentz as franchise continues search for new direction

Perhaps the worst-kept secret of the offseason is now official. The Washington Commanders have released quarterback Carson Wentz and, in doing so, saved $20 million in cap space.

Signed last offseason in what many thought was an odd move for Washington, Wentz never really got going. He played just seven games and had a 2-5 record, throwing for only 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Taylor Heinicke took over from Wentz after an injury and Washington never looked back. While Wentz was reinstated, it was only briefly as rookie Sam Howell took over, essentially ending Wentz's time in Washington.

Now without a team, it remains to be seen who will take a chance on the veteran who has now been cut by two teams in two years.

Who will be Commanders' QB1 for 2023 NFL season?

Coach Ron Rivera stated that second year quarterback Sam Howell is the "likely" starter for Washington next season. New offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said the same, so it looks like Howell will be QB1 next season.

That is, of course, barring any big free-agent splash from the franchise as there are plenty of veteran quarterbacks out there. Derek Carr and Jimmy Garoppolo headline the free agent class.

Is Dan Snyder selling the Commanders?

There is still a thought that owner Dan Snyder will see the embattled franchise, but it is going to take some time. Having reportedly blocked Amazon founder Jeff Bezos from trying to purchase his team, Snyder will be looking to play the long game.

Many Washington and NFL fans want Snyder out, but don't expect any movement to happen for a while.
