Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III criticized Miami-Dade Police over its treatment of Olympic medalist Fred Kerley during his arrest on Thursday. The incident, captured on body camera footage, showed multiple officers subduing Kerley with physical force and a taser.
Kerley recently represented Team USA, securing bronze in the 100m at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Through his X account, Griffin shared the body camera footage. His reaction sparked debate about proper police conduct and excessive force, as reported by multiple sources.
"This is COMPLETE OVERUSE OF FORCE by the Miami-Dade Police against Fred Kerley. The same Fred Kerley, who just finished representing the USA and winning a Bronze Medal in the 100m at the 2024 Olympics in Paris," Griffin III tweeted.

The confrontation started when Kerley approached officers about his vehicle parked near an active police scene. The arrest affidavit described Kerley as having "an aggressive demeanor" and attempting to "force his way through" two officers despite requests to leave.
Robert Griffin III emphasizes his perspective
Robert Griffin III's analysis highlighted concerning moments.
"It is clear that the first Police officer put his hands on Fred for no apparent reason. From that point on, the Police officer escalated the situation by pushing Fred extremely hard after Fred clearly asked him not to touch him,"Griffin III tweeted.
The body camera footage shows four officers wrestling Kerley down, delivering multiple "hammer fists" to his head and "several elbows" to his upper back. One officer struck Kerley's rib cage before deploying the taser, while Kerley's girlfriend repeatedly pleaded "Stop."
Judge Mindy Glazer questioned the officers' approach during Kerley's hearing, noting his clean record and Olympic status. Kerley faces charges including battery against a police officer, resisting without violence and disorderly conduct. Miami Beach police spokesperson Christopher Bess confirmed the incident will undergo standard use-of-force review procedures.
The incident mirrors a case in September involving Miami Dolphins' Tyreek Hill. Hill was forcefully removed from his car and pinned down at a traffic stop. That incident led to Officer Danny Torres being placed on "administrative duties" following an internal review.
